Shabbat Parashat Vayigash | 5768
Vayigash | 6 Tevet 5768 | 12/15/2007
Before Yaakov went down to Egypt, Hashem appeared to him in a prophetic dream with a consoling message: “Do not fear going down to Egypt, for there I will make you a great nation. I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will certainly bring you up, and Yosef will put his hand on your eyes” (Bereishit 46: 2-4).
Question: I often have itchy dry skin. Is it permitted on Shabbat to relieve the itch by scratching if, based on experience, I know that some flakes will fall off?
[We saw that in Chasidic thought, the basic elements in the service of Hashem are love of Hashem and the realization that His Presence is everywhere and that everything is a manifestation of His light.]
Case: The plaintiff (=pl) worked for two years as a teacher in a yeshiva day school (=def). Near year’s end, def’sprincipal sent termination notices to all of the non-tenured staff. However, he allegedly (def denies it) orally assured pl that he would be rehired. During the summer break, the principle told pl that he was fired. All agree that pl is a successful, dedicated teacher.
