Parashat Hashavuah: “Like this, see and sanctify”

“This month is for you the ‘head’ of the months” (Shemot 12:2). “Moshe had difficulty with the emergence of the new moon until Hashem showed him the moon as its crescent emerged, and said to him: ‘Like this, see and sanctify’” (Rashi, ad loc.). The nations of the world count the months from Tishrei, and Bnei Yisrael count from Nisan. Our tradition is that not only is this the month of past liberation, but also of the future one (Rosh Hashana 11a). It also comes with a special mitzva: “Observe the month of the spring.”

Ein Ayah: Physical and Spiritual Efforts Behind Miracles

[One of the miracles for which one has to make a beracha is the falling of boulders at Beit Choron at the time of Yehoshua. The baraita uses the term algabish for these stones, which is a word used for the stones that will fall in the battle of Gog and Magog (see Yechezkel 38:22).] These refer to the stones that stopped due to a man (al gav ish) and fell due to a man. One “ish” is Moshe (see Bamidbar 12:3), who stopped the hail in midair (see Shemot 9:33). The other is Yehoshua, who was an ish (see Bamidbar 27:18) who brought down large stones in battle (Yehoshua 10:11).

P'ninat Mishpat: Responsibility for Damage to a Rented Apartment

The plaintiff (=pl) rented an apartment to the defendant (=def). Upon the end of the rental, pl saw that the special glass on the sliding door in the living room was severely cracked and has demanded that def pay to have it fixed. Def does not know how the crack occurred but assumes that it occurred from natural causes during a period of extreme cold. He cannot rule out the possibility that one of his children cracked it.
