Parashat Hashavua: Freedom … Not Only of Worship

After the plague of darkness, the negotiations in regard to the exodus from Egypt between Moshe and Pharaoh were renewed (Shemot 10:24-26). Pharaoh was prepared for the women and children to join the men in a religious festival in the desert, but he would not allow the people to bring their flocks. Moshe responded that Bnei Yisrael must be allowed to bring all of their animals (along with a fair share of Pharaoh’s animals). We need to understand whether this was just a financial negotiation or whether something deeper was involved here.

Ask the Rabbi: Making Up a Tefilla With No Net Gain

I heard that if one davened during Rosh Chodesh and left out Ya’aleh V’yavo (=YVY), which he then fixed with a repeat Shemoneh Esrei but forgot “v’ten tal umatar” (=vttum), he does not have to repeat Shemoneh Esrei a third time because he said all the necessary elements. Is the same true in the opposite case – he left out vttum in the first tefilla and forgot YVY in the second – or is leaving out vttum worse? Also, what happens if one left out vttum at Friday Mincha – does he say an extra Ma’ariv to make up for the invalid Mincha, or since we do not say vttum on Shabbat, one gains nothing?

P'ninat Mishpat: Authority to Rule Based on Convicton Over Halachic Evidence

You asked about a city’s set beit din to whom a document was presented and beit din knows that it is forged by an expert and that the witnesses who signed it are liars, although this has not been formally substantiated in court. Based on their personal knowledge [based on experience/ intuition, …], beit din ripped up the document. Does the document’s owner have claims against beit din? Does a respected beit din that is careful to not extract money from people without basis, have the power to take such steps as a hora’at sha’ah (exceptional remedy to a situation)?
