The Eretz Hemdah “Torah Leadership” Program is an advanced Beit Midrash program for training rabbis and community leaders in Israel and the Diaspora. Its goal is to develop outstanding Torah scholars, halachic decisors, educators, and leaders who are equipped to assume spiritual and communal responsibility and to make a meaningful impact on Jewish communities in Israel and around the world.

The program is designed for a small, select group of outstanding graduates of the Religious Zionist educational system. Participants are chosen through a rigorous selection process and commit to an eight-year track: five years of intensive study in the Beit Midrash, followed by at least three years of rabbinic service in Jewish communities.

At the heart of the program is intensive and comprehensive study of Torah and Halacha in preparation for the Chief Rabbinate of Israel’s advanced “Rav Ir” certification. The curriculum includes, among other subjects, the laws of the High Holy Days, chametz and Pesach, Chol HaMoed, mikvaot, kashrut and other areas of Issur VeHeter, mourning, prayer and blessings, the synagogue, mezuzah and Sefer Torah, and conversion. Alongside in-depth study, participants receive practical training in halachic teaching and decision-making, including specialized training in the laws of ketamim (stains). They also study Tanach, Jewish faith, and Jewish thought, reflecting a broad approach to Torah study that develops spiritual depth and the ability to address the challenges of contemporary Jewish life.

The program is rooted in a Religious Zionist worldview that sees a deep connection between Torah study, the State of Israel, and responsibility for the Jewish people as a whole. Participants and graduates serve in the IDF and in the reserves, viewing public service and sharing in the responsibilities of Israeli society as an integral part of their rabbinic formation.

The program demands a substantial investment of time and effort and includes intensive study, examinations, and communal involvement.

As part of their preparation for community leadership, participants and their wives take part in courses and professional training in areas including mental health, medicine and Halacha, technology and Halacha, Jewish lifecycle issues and end-of-life situations, public speaking and effective communication, and marital counseling. The program is designed to combine rigorous Torah and halachic study with practical preparation for the rabbinate and community leadership.
