Maran Hgaon Shaul Israeli zt"l

President and founder of Eretz Hamdah

Maran HaGaon Rabbi Shaul Yisraeli was born on 25 Tammuz 5669 in Slutsk, Belarus, to Rabbi Binyamin Izraelit and Rabbanit Chava Hy”d.

He made aliyah to Eretz Yisrael in 5694 after receiving an immigration certificate sent to him by Maran Rabbi Avraham Yitzhak HaKohen Kook zt”l. He then studied at Mercaz HaRav Yeshiva.

In 5698, he was appointed the first rabbi of Kfar HaRoeh.

In 5713, he was elected to the expanded Council of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel.

In 5719, Rabbi Tzvi Yehuda HaKohen Kook zt”l, Rosh Yeshivat Mercaz HaRav, asked him to deliver the yeshiva’s shiur klali.

In 5725, he was appointed as a dayan on the Supreme Rabbinical Court, where he issued hundreds of rulings.

In 5747, together with Rabbi Moshe Ehrenreich and Rabbi Yosef Carmel, he founded Eretz Hemdah, Institute for Advanced Jewish Studies in Jerusalem, to train dayanim, and served as its president.

In 5752, he was awarded the Israel Prize for Rabbinic Literature.

Online Evening of Study in Memory of R. Avraham Guto Klein z”l

Eretz Hemdah invites the public to an online evening of study in memory of R. Avraham Guto Klein z”l, a survivor of the Holocaust of Hungarian Jewry.

The program will feature lectures by Dr. Yael Ziegler and Rabbi Prof. Yehuda Brandes, addressing faith, the Book of Lamentations, and contemporary issues through the lens of Halacha.

The event will take place on Thursday, 2 Av 5786, July 16, 2026, at 8:35 p.m. via Zoom.
